Te Rau Aroha Marae is the world’s southern-most marae. Located in Bluff, the marae was originally established in the late 1800s as a hostel for local Māori who lived on islands off the Southland coast. The marae was developed in 1985, but the tīpuna whare, Tahu-pōtiki, which takes its name from the ancestor (tīpuna) of the local tribe, Ngāi Tahu, was opened in February 2003.

Southern Generation Limited Partnership

Southern Generation Limited Partnership, is a joint venture between Pioneer Energy Ltd., Electricity Invercargill Ltd., and The Power Company Ltd., a group with strong regional, cultural and strategic alignments. In 2015, Pioneer Energy (PE) contacted us and asked if the Trust would take on the predator control monitoring as outlined in their Ecological Monitoring and Management Plan (EMMP). We jumped at the chance to set up a trap network for possums and mustelids in Greenhills, an area just outside the Bluff peninsula. The main objective of the EMMP’s predator control program is to provide a buffer between the mainland and the Bluff peninsula that will reduce the rate of reinvasion of possums and mustelids. This program will give significant support to conservation management on Bluff Hill carried out by by BHMET. PE provided startup funds to purchase 20 traps and makes an annual donation to BHMET. We are proud to be working with a company concerned about their impact on the environment.

Te Runanga o Ngai TahuTe Runanga o Ngai TahuTe Runanga O Nga Tahu

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu (Te Rūnanga), the tribal council, was established by the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Act 1996 to be the tribal servant, protecting and advancing the collective interests of the iwi.

Our dream is that our ancestral landscape is protected and our people have living relationships with their whakapapa and traditions through the environment. The goal is that Ngāi Tahu is a principled kaitiaki (steward) of our takiwā (tribal territory). Our lands have always been fundamental to our tribal identity. We know our place in the world through our whakapapa to our takiwā, it carries our stories of creation, warfare, marriage and times of change. Restoring our tribal footprint to our ancestral landscape, in both traditional and contemporary forms, is a galvanising force within the iwi.
