Story

Nursery

We can’t just head down to Mitre 10 to pick up a trailer full of plants for the hill. Not only would it be prohibitively expensive, they wouldn’t be Motupōhue plants. And that really matters - we only plant ‘ecosourced’ plants - seeds are taken from Motupōhue, grown in our native plant nursery on Motupōhue and then planted out on Motupōhue. This way, we grow the right species that are hardened to the tough Bluff conditions.

Te Korowai Whakahou (Restore the Cloak) is at 16 Barrow Street, just behind the Bluff Town Hall. If you look over the fence, you’ll see 25,000 plants that spend 6-12 months in the nursery until they’re ready to head up onto the hill.

The nursery is a hive of activity and we have amazing volunteers who help with weeding work. It’s very therapuetic mahi… albeit never ending! The weeds grow all the time and by the time the weeding has been done, it’s time to start at the other end again.
